To be eligible, you must:

- Be on campus in Abu Dhabi during the assistantship semester.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher with a strong academic and disciplinary record.

This assistantship will support the communication and outreach agenda for two forthcoming volumes of essays edited by Joe Davies (NYUAD) and Natasha Loges (Hochschule für Musik, Freiburg): Global Perspectives on Women Pianists (Boydell & Brewer) and In a New Key: Studies of Women Pianists (Oxford University Press). The assistant will work closely with the faculty mentor (and a team of international collaborators) on the following initiatives: 1) Filming and curating a series of videos that showcase the stories and music profiled in the books; 2) Preparing open access educational content (e.g., blogposts and undergraduate research guides) related to the themes of the books; 3) Maintaining a website/digital presence for the books; 4) Assisting with the organization of a festival, "Celebrating Women in Music", linked to the launch of the books (October 2026); this will involve talks, panel discussions, concerts, and workshops for students and educators. These initiatives will contribute to increased emphasis on women in music across research and teaching; 2) a deeper understanding of the piano as an instrument of globalism; and 3) enhanced public perception of women’s creativity across music and the arts. About the Books Global Perspectives on Women Pianists presents myriad stories of women pianists around the world between the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries. It takes readers on a journey from East Asia to Africa, Russia to Eastern Europe, across Western Europe, with final stops in the Americas. The essays explore the rich and varied ways that women’s lives may play out at the piano, usually in some combination of being performers, composers, and teachers – and always in negotiation with tightly controlled gendered norms. As pianos were transported across the world, they often retained aspects of their associations with middle-class women’s gentility, but also fostered forms of empowerment. The case studies in this volume demonstrate that being a woman pianist was, in many cases, a route to professional and financial independence, participating in the public sphere, finding kinship within larger musical communities, and achieving self-expression. In a New Key: Studies of Women Pianists rethinks the long-established stereotype of the woman pianist as a model of bourgeois gendered gentility, even as this evolved into the faithful non-creating performer and/or dedicated teacher. Collecting case studies from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, it presents diverse perspectives on women’s pianistic lives, as well as identifying persistent challenges. The book asks new questions about women’s lives and careers: how might established, familiar legacies be interpreted afresh? What kinds of relationships do women pianists forge with their partners, students, and each other? Given the recurring tendency of history to erase women’s achievements, how might suppressed individual and collective legacies be excavated and celebrated? The Producing Assistantship will assist the Producing Department at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi with planning and logistics for all The Arts Center’s events during the spring 2025 season. During each residency, the Producing Intern will work closely with producers and shadow as much of the artists' events schedule as they can and assist with problem-solving and event management. Interns will become The Arts Center ambassadors by promoting shows and events on various student portals amongst their peers. This assistantship is very flexible depending on schedule and interest, but it does require students to be based in the UAE. Students will be required to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week, which will include evenings and weekends. Weekly shifts will include consistent time slots that can be planned ahead of time and varied hours depending on The Arts Center’s events. Below are the intern responsibilities: - Be passionate about the performing arts and eager to learn and grow in arts administration. - Attend performances and various Off The Stage events (workshops, Arts Chats, community meals, post-show Q&As) on and off campus. - Carry out specific duties in preparation for artist arrivals: preparing dressing rooms, welcome bags, scheduled and on-site checks, meeting artists on arrival when necessary with producers. - Distribute and advertise performances and events via student portals and social media. - Actively brainstorm ways of building a dynamic art community on campus, along with encouraging students to participate in Arts Center performances and events. - Perform admin tasks, including, but not limited to: budget and petty cash tracking and reconciliation, updating calendars and schedules, and working on monthly activity reports. - Represent the Arts Center at Student Interest Groups and inform students of events and shows. - Moderate Arts Chats with a panel of 3-4 artists with the guidance of the producers. - Serve as ambassadors to participate and potentially organize focus groups with peer groups and students.

The aim of the assistantship is to provide insights into how steppe/desert locations in Central Asia have been inhabited over time. The student will be required to search for, read, and summarize Russian language historical and ethnographic literature about how the steppe/desert was inhabited. You will be required to write up a short summary of the literature, noting the relevant page numbers and/or quotes. This work is part of a larger project to understand how the Qizilqum (straddling Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan) was inhabited, and moved through, over time.

Over the past decade, rapid urbanization has shaped the auditory environment of these cities, from traffic noise and religious chants to natural sounds like rustling leaves and animal calls. By categorizing frequently, occasionally, and rarely occurring sounds, this study aims to create a comprehensive sound profile of different urban areas. The project will involve large-scale field recording of ambient sounds across multiple locations. Using machine learning and deep learning models (e.g., CNNs, neural networks, and random forests), we will develop an automated system to classify and identify different sonic environments. This process includes pre-processing recordings to remove technical noise, extracting key acoustic features (such as MFCCs), and visualizing patterns using spectrograms. The insights gained will not only enhance our understanding of urban soundscapes but also provide valuable data for city planning, improving public spaces, and designing urban environments that support well-being. Developing Machine Learning Security Attacks and Defenses for Connected Autonomous Vehicles: The Research Assistant will work closely with the professor and other senior researchers in my lab to develop different types of security attacks and defenses in connected autonomous vehicles in the smart cities settings. First task will be Implementing backdoor attacks and defenses for autonomous vehicles and evaluating them in the CARLA full-system simulator, demonstrating a smart mobility use case where a complete environmental model is available. The work would analyze the pros and cons of existing defense mechanisms, their robustness in a full-system setting, and potentially devise a more powerful defense considering the ADAS stack. The second task will be evaluating the robustness of traffic sign recognition and/or object detection DNNs against adversarial attacks while considering the complete pipeline including traffic sign detection and other preprocessing stages, in CARLA simulator. The student will first review the classical Blasius solution for steady 2D boundary layer flow over a flat plate and understand how viscous effects create thin layers near boundaries. Using numerical simulation (MATLAB/Python), the student will then model the flow over a flat plate at increasing Reynolds numbers using the full 2D Navier–Stokes equations. They will visualize the velocity gradient near the wall, track the boundary layer thickness, and identify conditions under which separation occurs (e.g., by introducing adverse pressure gradients via wall shaping). This position provides real-world experience for conducting field research and analyzing data in the area of Development Economics and related fields. Working directly with Professor Yaw Nyarko (Economics) and a global team of researchers, the Student Assistant will contribute to various research projects. - Support the research efforts of NYU Center for Technology, Economics, and Development (CTED); - Conduct research on blockchain, commodities exchanges, economic development, and complete other tasks under the direction of Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Yaw Nyarko, and Research Assistant (RA) Team; - Clean, manage, and oversee the data analysis of large datasets for field research projects; - Conduct statistical analyses of data using Stata and Matlab; - Develop research design for survey and update survey instruments; - Assemble information in clear, concise reports; - Prepare literature reviews and research reports for concept notes, academic papers, and presentations; and - Assist on the marketing and communications for programs and events (i.e., update websites, prepare newsletter mailings and social media posts, plan CTED events and liaise with student body).
Skills the Student Will Gain:
- Gain real-world experience conducting field work in Development Economics. - Learn to assemble, graph data, manipulate economic data and/or create new variables using Excel, Stata, or Matlab. - Work with the RA team to assemble research reports for concept notes, academic papers, and presentations. - Gain experience managing large datasets for field research project in Ghana, West Africa. - Work on economic development projects related to the UAE and Africa.
Skills Needed:
- Exceptional academic record - Excellent attention to detail - Strong interest in economic development in emerging markets - Prior field research or research assistant experience in the fields of Economic Development a plus - Strong interest in coding and manipulating data in Excel, Stata, or Matlab
