In addition to serving as Associate Professor of Drama, Robert Vorlicky is the founding coordinator of the Honors Program and a former director of Theatre Studies in NYU Tisch School of the Arts' Department of Drama. Dr. Vorlicky is also an affiliate faculty member at NYU's Department of English (where he teaches graduate courses) and the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, as well as NYU Abu Dhabi's theater program.
Vorlicky is the author of Act Like a Man: Challenging Masculinities in American Drama, winner of the CHOICE Award for Outstanding Academic Publication; Tony Kushner in Conversation; and From Inner Worlds to Outer Space: The Multimedia Performances of Dan Kwong (all published by the University of Michigan Press). He co-edits the Critical Performances series at Michigan. He is a past president of the international American Theatre and Drama Society (1999-2002), where he currently serves as an elected board member. On the editorial boards of several academic journals and book series, he publishes widely and speaks nationally and internationally on US drama, performance, and theory, and African theatre.
Vorlicky has received numerous fellowships, including those from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Foundation (senior professorship at the University of Zagreb), Karolyi Foundation in Creative Writing, Wisconsin Arts Board, and numerous research grants from the Tisch School of the Arts. He is a curator and dramaturg for mainstage productions in the Drama Department, as well as in the department’s individual training studios.
Along with teaching at NYU, he has been a visiting professor in Theatre Studies at U of Zagreb and Yale. Vorlicky has been a nominee for the Distinguished Teaching Award at NYU. During 2019-20, Vorlicky is teaching at NYU Abu Dhabi and will be teaching “African Women Playwrights" at NYU Accra in fall 2020 — the first Tisch School of the Arts Theatre Studies course in Ghana.
