Hassan Sajjad is a computer scientist specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing. He is a Visiting Associate Professor at NYU Abu Dhabi, a Full Professor at Dalhousie University, and the Director of the HyperMatrix Research Lab.
His research focuses on developing safe, reliable, and trustworthy AI, with particular emphasis on AI safety, representation learning, interpretability, and evaluation. He also pursues diverse complementary research areas including machine translation, language generation and natural language processing for low-resource languages. Beyond fundamental research, Sajjad is interested in developing AI solutions that address real-world challenges with tangible impact.
Sajjad's research has been published at leading international venues, including NeurIPS, ICML, and ACL, and has been recognized and featured by prominent research and technology outlets, including MIT News. Sajjad is actively engaged in the broader AI and NLP research community, serving as a speaker, organizer, area chair, and reviewer for leading machine learning and computational linguistics conferences and journals. He has delivered more than 50 talks, including several keynote presentations. Sajjad has also developed toolkits and systems that have been adopted widely by the research community. For example, NeuroX, a toolkit for neuron interpretation of neural networks, has been downloaded more than 20,000 times. His work on dialectal machine translation has also had substantial real-world reach, being used worldwide to translate billions of words.
