Research Areas: Fundamental Structure of the Universe, Supergravity, String Phenomenology, and Extra-dimensional Theories

Fernando Quevedo is a Professor of Physics at NYU Abu Dhabi. He holds a PhD in Physics from The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied under Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg, and a BSc in Physics from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. His expertise lies in high-energy theoretical physics, particularly in string theory, quantum field theory, and cosmology.
Quevedo's research focuses on the fundamental structure of the universe, with significant contributions to supergravity, string phenomenology, and extra-dimensional theories. He has published over 220 research articles in leading scientific journals, accumulating more than 20,000 citations. Additionally, he has co-authored articles for Physics World and Scientific American, making complex theoretical physics accessible to wider audiences.
Before joining NYU Abu Dhabi, Quevedo was Professor of Theoretical Physics and later Professor Emeritus at the University of Cambridge, where he was also a Teaching Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. He served as Director of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) from 2009 to 2019. His contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous honors, including the John Wheatley Prize from the American Physical Society, the Abdus Salam Medal, and multiple Doctor Honoris Causa degrees.
