Dattaraj Dhuri’s research concerns understanding the emergence of sunspots, their evolution leading to explosive events such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and their consequences for space-weather and atmospheres of Earth and Mars. Solar storms release electromagnetic radiation and energetic particles (SEPs) which can be catastrophic for the life and infrastructure on Earth. Solar storms also play a significant role in shaping the atmosphere of today’s Mars and the evolution of its Climate. Dattaraj uses machine learning (ML) techniques to analyse observations from Sun and Mars missions to uncover mysteries of solar magnetism and its consequences for Earth and Mars.
In his PhD research at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, India, Dattaraj explored applications and interpretation of ML algorithms to sunspot magnetic-field observations for understanding pre-emergence patterns as well as precursors to solar flares. Prior to undertaking PhD, Dattaraj obtained a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Mumbai, India.
