Laboratories Operation and Maintenance

The Laboratories Operation and Maintenance Department (Lab Ops) functions as a real-time business continuity unit that anticipates needs and problems in advance, puts resources in place within the limits of the resources provided by the university, and responds in real-time to ensure that laboratory activities are enabled.

Lab Ops acts as advocates on behalf of the faculty, researchers and students in matters that are operational in nature but are intertwined with the academic mission. Lab Ops provides support for research and teaching to all of NYUAD labs and divisions.

Lab Ops Services

Provides services within various units of activity.

Research Technical Services (RTS) supports NYU Abu Dhabi laboratories in the following areas:
- Cleaning of research, core, and teaching labs.
- Handles hazardous waste by collecting and autoclaving biowaste and the collection of hazardous waste.
- Manage house gas supplies.
- Provide lab design and fit-out services.
- Ensure that the Facilities Management (FM) contractor maintains lab infrastructure at levels that meet our functional specifications.
- Provide lab modification services in support of changes in research and teaching requirements within the team's limits of agreement and scope.
- Provide maintenance and technical support for common lab equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, incubators, etc. and provide replacement equipment.
- Provide workforce support as needed.
- Provide skilled labor for equipment maintenance that is not done by the manufacturer's service engineers.
- Provide skilled labor and technician support for activities in Core Labs, the Machine
- Shop, the Scene Shop in the Performing Arts Center, and labs that need technical assistance for short periods.
Research Fabrication Services (RFS) support the research of NYU Abu Dhabi by designing and manufacturing custom parts based on the needs of the researchers. In-house design and manufacturing allow for tailor-made solutions in a shorter timeframe and at a reduced cost.

Research Fabrication Services include but are not limited to:
- Custom parts in various materials using the appropriate techniques, including plastics, metals & wood.
- Precise assemblies with controlled dimensional tolerances.
- Custom experiment enclosures and benches.
- Custom PCBs
- Troubleshooting expensive and hard to replace electronic equipment and repair whenever possible.
- Assist researchers when specialty electronics are required, but the skills are not within the research team's abilities.
Research Materials Acquisitions

The Research Materials Acquisitions team (RMA) assists with acquisitions for the Core Technology Platforms and Laboratory Operations and Maintenance departments to support the research and teaching missions of NYUAD. Working in collaboration with the procurement department, the team offers end-to-end procurement services, saving valuable time while increasing the efficiency of the procurement process. The RMA team provides guidance and regular updates on outstanding acquisitions until the procurement process is completed. This simplifies the follow-up procedures for purchases and ensures end users always have access to accurate and up-to-date information about their acquisitions. Close monitoring by the RMA team helps improve the lead time of each step throughout the acquisition process and help reduce the impact of disruptions to the supply chain.

Research Visualization is a specialized art that enables the communications of scientific concepts to help promote the research, break down complex ideas into easy-to-understand representations, and connect the researcher to the public using aesthetically beautiful and engaging visuals.

The Research Visualization team assists researchers by creating 2D and 3D graphics, animations, and videos for scientific journal covers, journal article graphics as well as visuals for use in presentations, conferences, and social media.
