The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is the unified organization of those activities at NYU Abu Dhabi that govern the safety and welfare of human research participants in accordance with the ethical principles of the Belmont Report (PDF) and all applicable country law, institutional policies, and federal law and regulations.
At NYUAD, all research involving human subjects (funded or not funded) must be reviewed and approved by the University's Institutional Review Board (IRB) before being carried out. The NYUAD IRB is authorized to review and approve research involving human subjects through a Federalwide Assurance, an agreement with the US Department of Health and Human Services, through the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).
At the institutional level, the HRPP — under the jurisdiction of the Vice Provost for Research Policies and Governance — includes: the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Research Ethics Committee (REC), the Administrative Support Staff, the investigators and their research teams, research study sponsors (where applicable), and the research participants themselves. The written procedures of the NYUAD HRPP plan fully describe the IRB membership and operations, IRB administrative support, and other matters pertinent to the conduct of research involving human subjects at NYUAD.
In its Federalwide Assurance (FWA), NYUAD assures that all research involving human subjects will comply with the ethical principles of the Belmont Report (PDF) and that all federal regulations governing research involving human subjects will be followed for research funded by US federal sponsors.
Mission Statement
The mission of the NYUAD HRPP is to protect and foster awareness of the rights, dignity, welfare, and privacy of human subjects participating in social and behavioral research under the auspices of NYUAD. The program is committed to advancing the ethical treatment of human research participants, promoting the responsible conduct of research, and ensuring and protecting the rights of every human research volunteer. The Human Research Protection Program achieves its mission by:
- Ensuring that all research involving human subjects receives the required approvals before research activities are initiated.
- Creating an environment at the University of respect for, and understanding of, the rights and welfare of research participants.
- Providing professional administrative support to the University's Institutional Review Board (IRB).
- Educating the University community about the ethical principles of the Belmont Report, University research regulations, policies, and practices pertaining to human subjects protection, and applicable governmental law and regulations.
- Conducting activities to enhance compliance with the requirements of the HRPP.
