Convened IRB and REC Meeting Dates

Exempt and Expedited Review

If your study meets the criteria for either expedited review or an exemption determination, there is no specific deadline for submitting applications. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. The dates below apply to convened (full) board review only.

Convened Board Review

At NYU Abu Dhabi, the full board convenes in two capacities:

• As the ‘IRB’: For Social & behavioral research that is more than minimal risk or does not qualify for either exempt or expedited status.

• As the ‘REC’: For Abu Dhabi based biomedical and health-related research and studies.

  Your study may be directed for convened board review if it meets any of the criteria below: 

• Research involving greater than minimal risk

• Research involving prisoners

• Clinical trials or randomized controlled trials

• Studies involving the collection of sensitive information in which there may be concerns about data security or confidentiality

• Multi-center studies 

• Genomics research 

• Processing of medical data outside the UAE

• Pharmaceutical- or industry-sponsored research

• All Abu Dhabi–based COVID-19 research

  The below dates are ONLY for submissions requiring convened IRB review. Please submit at least 2 weeks prior to a meeting date to better secure a spot on the agenda and ensure that a primary review can be conducted. Submissions too close to a meeting date may be assigned to the following meeting
