Center for Behavioral Institutional Design (C-BID)

The Center for Behavioral Institutional Design (C-BID) at NYU Abu Dhabi is a globally recognized research hub that explores in depth the origins of human behavioral diversity, undertakes the development of empirically informed theories of human behavior, leads their application to public policy, and builds capacity in behavioral social science in the public and private sector, locally and internationally. C-BID collaborates closely with several UAE government strategic partners, working hand in hand to address and advance key economic priorities that will contribute to the sustainable growth of the nation.

The overarching long-term goal of the Center for Behavioral Institutional Design at NYU Abu Dhabi (C-BID) is to construct empirically validated models of human behavior and use them to design and implement policies and institutions that will improve social welfare. For this purpose, C-BID brings together faculty from across the NYU Global Network, across the social and behavioral sciences (economists, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, and neuro-scientists), as well as leading policymakers, to establish a globally-recognized knowledge hub for behavioral social science and public policy.

Figure 1: The three interconnected research clusters: Human Behavior, Behavioral Institutional Design, and Behavioral Policy.

The Center for Behavioral Institutional Design is organized around three closely intertwined research clusters (see Figure 1):

The Human Behavior cluster explores the institutional, social, and biological foundations of human behavior.

The Behavioral Institutional Design cluster explores institutions, policies, and mechanisms that promote social welfare, considering the rich behavioral diversity uncovered by researchers in the Human Behavior cluster.

The Behavioral Policy cluster uses the insights obtained from our research in the Human Behavior and Behavioral Institutional Design clusters to design smart and welfare-enhancing behavioral institutions and policies that consider the specific socioeconomic context in which they are embedded. Naturally, research in the Behavioral Policy cluster provides insights about human behavior and institutional design that feedback into our Human Behavior and Behavioral Institutional Design research.
