The sixth edition of the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award, presented by NYU Abu Dhabi under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, and in partnership with Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), has one week remaining for 2018 submissions. The Award aims to cultivate emerging artistic talent in the UAE by annually recognizing the creation of an artwork that, in the spirit of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, can be publicly exhibited and enjoyed.
The highly prestigious award is open to all emerging artists and creative practitioners in the UAE, who are either in college or have graduated within the last five years. Entrants may propose work in any medium including, but not limited to: photography, sculpture, installation, land art, or video. Applications close on January 22, 2018.
ADMAF Founder, H.E. Huda Ibrahim Al Khamis said, “Each year, the exceptional quality and diversity of responses to the Christo and Jeanne-Claude award exemplify the innovative and pioneering spirit of visual artists in the United Arab Emirates. At ADMAF, we believe that emerging talent becomes the leading voices of tomorrow through programs that combine creative inspiration and professional structure. We are proud to offer the nation’s young artists a prominent platform not only to exhibit their work for public enjoyment but also to receive invaluable guidance, mentorship and support. I am excited to see the captivating and thoughtful works these young visionaries will propose in 2018.”
Christo said, “Supporting creativity in the UAE is so important and the experience this Award offers young artists is tremendous. Good luck to all those who apply.”
“This Award provides an extraordinary opportunity for young artists to imagine and realize large scale public artworks in the tradition of Jeanne-Claude and Christo. The finalist will receive mentoring, professional experience, and the chance to turn their artistic vision into reality,” said David Darts, Associate Dean of Arts, Associate Professor Art and Art Professions at NYUAD.
The winning artist will be granted $10,000 to produce their proposed work, and personally gifted a further $5,000 by Christo to pursue their career in the arts. The awarded artwork will then be unveiled at NYU Abu Dhabi in November of 2018.
Established in 2012, the Award is designed to encourage the creation of new artwork in the UAE, act as a launch pad for visual artists across the Emirates, and offer the winner an insight into professional life as an artist from conception to exhibition. The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award is the only program in the region to support and nurture participants with mentorship and advice from industry professionals.
