J-Term 2023: Students Engage in Site-Specific Learning in Unique Environments

More than 42 classes see students engage with high-level speakers and important spaces.

Students have embarked on the all-important three-week course that sees them engage with important figures and immerse themselves in captivating environments.

The three-week, highly immersive learning experiences will intensify the student’s focus and reach beyond the classroom to incorporate experiential learning. The courses are location-specific in over 30 countries and connect students to the place where they study.

Over four years, students will take three J-Term courses: one fully abroad in one of the NYU Global Program sites, one fully in Abu Dhabi to learn more about the UAE, and one that is based in Abu Dhabi and includes a seminar abroad in the important regions around the UAE.

“J-Term is a curricular and pedagogical laboratory of intensive classes led by exceptionally talented faculty. The highly curated courses have students bring theory to practice through extensive research, fieldwork in collaboration with community partners, and artistic production in the real world,"

Carol Brandt, Vice Provost and Associate Vice Chancellor of Global Education and Outreach

Intellectually linked to their locations, the courses take advantage of local resources; explore the history, culture, economy, and society of the host communities, and often involve collaborative activities with local students and faculty.

The courses illuminate the interdependence of local knowledge and global awareness while fostering cross-cultural research and insights into complex global issues.

NYU Abu Dhabi stages J-Term courses in 15 cities: Abu Dhabi, Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, New York, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Washington DC.
