From Military Stations to the NYU Abu Dhabi Global Stage

Growing up across different parts of India helped shape who Gurakshat is today

My father serves in the Indian Army, so home has never really been a single city. I've grown up across seven different military stations throughout India, moving every few years. Every posting meant a new school, new friends, new surroundings, and a completely different way of life.

Gurakshat, NYU Abu Dhabi Class of 2030.

Why NYU Abu Dhabi

Coming from an Army Public School where classmates are from every corner of India, I already knew how much I enjoyed learning alongside people with different backgrounds. The more I read about NYU Abu Dhabi, the more it felt like an extension of the environment I had grown up in, but on a global scale.

Meeting a staff member from NYUAD’s admissions team during an outreach event made my application decision even clearer. The conversations reflected everything I'd been reading about NYUAD: warmth, curiosity, openness, and a genuine investment in students. Applying for Early Decision felt like the right choice.

NYU's global network also stood out to me. The idea that my university experience won’t be confined to one campus or one country is incredibly exciting. Being able to study away within the NYU system while still remaining part of one university community is a unique opportunity.

Hopes and aspirations

I plan to major in Economics with a concentration in Finance, and I look forward to exploring behavioral economics, finance, entrepreneurship, and global markets while learning alongside classmates from dozens of different countries. I think the conversations outside the classroom will be just as valuable as the lectures themselves.

Having connected with quite a few members from the Class of 2030 online, it's been amazing getting to know people from places I've only ever read about. We’ve made plans for Marhaba, talked about exploring the campus together, and discussed all the things we want to do over the next four years.

I'm keen to join student groups, attend events, and simply be part of such a vibrant campus community.

Around the same time as my move to Abu Dhabi, my father is being transferred to a new Army posting. Although my parents will be busy relocating within India, they have made plans to visit later in the year.

Four years from now, I hope to leave campus a better version of the person who first arrived.

Academically, I want to challenge the way I think. Personally, I hope to build lifelong friendships with people whose lives and perspectives are completely different from my own. Professionally, I want to develop the knowledge and experiences needed to build ventures that solve meaningful problems.
