I was born in Istanbul, Türkiye, but grew up in Kirklareli, a city near the Bulgarian border. When I was 14, a family discussion about the possibility of moving abroad came up. My parents followed through in part so that I could have a different type of education — I struggled in the Turkish public school system, where the focus is on memorization.
Moving to Canada
Living in Kirklareli, southern Ontario broadened my horizons in exceptional ways. I realized how much different cultures, religions, and languages shape our worldview. I was fascinated, growing determined to understand the world through different perspectives.
Beyond helping me develop academically and rediscover my love of learning, Canada also exposed me to different cultures for the first time.
How NYU Abu Dhabi stood out
When I learned about NYUAD, its global, interdisciplinary education that encourages independent thinking was appealing to me. From the beginning, I felt that this university was something extraordinary.
I was craving an education that transcended the lines between different countries, worldviews, and disciplines. NYUAD’s liberal arts education matched with its interdisciplinary curriculum, global education, diverse student body, and built-in study study away opportunities allows students to approach topics without regional or disciplinary restrictions and view the world through a global lens.
Additionally, NYUAD's support for undergraduate research was a big factor, since I plan on pursuing a career in academia.
I applied for Early Decision 1, with NYUAD being the first and only university I ever applied to.
Candidate Weekend
I loved the university even more after experiencing Candidate Weekend. There’s an extraordinarily strong sense of community. Our class of 2030 group chat constantly pings with notifications, and upperclassmen are always open to answering questions.
I plan to major in philosophy, and also hope to double major in legal studies. Additionally, I plan on taking Arabic courses and spending a semester in Paris to improve my French. Outside of the classroom, I’m interested in joining various groups such as the Law Society and Student Government.
Beyond academics, I’m enthusiastic to explore the UAE. Al Ain Oasis, wildlife at the Jubail Mangrove Park, Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and many more places.
Hello, NYUAD Class of 2030
I was counting down the days until Marhaba, and I am finally here now.
NYUAD has been my dream for so long. The idea of actually living on campus and attending classes feels surreal. I’m excited to explore my new home, reunite with my Candidate Weekend friends, meet new classmates, and take fascinating courses.
