NYUAD Library Statement on Artificial Intelligence and AI Literacy
As information professionals, we approach Generative AI as a new information tool and support a critical look at the use of AI, as we do with all information sources. We promote the use of AI that advocates and encourages human metacognition and critical thinking. Current and future learners must learn how to recognize high-quality information and understand their personal responsibility in using AI tools and AI-generated information ethically and responsibly. Information Literacy will become increasingly important as our world changes alongside AI.1
The NYUAD Library teaches workshops covering the ethical and responsible use of Generative AI. The teaching complies with the NYU Statement on Academic Integrity. Our workshops are grounded in information literacy principles centered around the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, encouraging students to understand the implications and pitfalls of using such tools by exploring:
- Critical thinking, skepticism, and questioning
- Critical pedagogy, focusing on social justice and what inequalities it may exacerbate or create
- Critique of the outputs and potential harms2
We follow local guidelines concerning AI Ethics, UAE Ethics: Principles and Guidelines, and we align with the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. We also abide by the Research Libraries Guiding Principles for Artificial Intelligence, created by the Association of Research Libraries.
All of our e-resources are licensed, and these resources may have guidelines about using their content with Generative AI tools (ex., uploading a journal article into an AI tool for synthesis). Please follow the guidelines listed on the homepage of these e-resources.
When choosing AI tools, we recommend reviewing NYU’s consideration of 3rd party tools, which emphasizes Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Intellectual Property (IP), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Privacy, and accessibility.
This statement was written without the use of AI.
