My Favorite Course in Philosophy
Why This Course
I was curious about the concept of logic and I also wanted to hone my logical thinking skills. As a philosophy student, this philosophy requirement without prerequisites was perfect for me to fulfill my first semester.
Also, I had attended Professor Matthew Silverstein's sample class during my Candidate Weekend and I really wanted to be in his class again. Bonus — he remembered me!
A Typical Day in This Class
The class had a weekly assignment. During the lecture, the professor would answer our questions and let us solve sample exercises. It was quite interactive even though it was a lecture with more than 20 people. The professor engaged more people by requesting for new volunteers each time. That helped encourage students who were not involved previously to join in.
Tips on Navigating What Major or Course to Take
- Try the Room of Requirement, a closed Facebook group to get some class recommendations from other students, especially for core and colloquia courses.
- If you plan on doing a double major, you need to plan ahead to make sure you can fit all the classes into your schedule. Make sure you consider the prerequisites to know what courses you'll need to take first.
Why NYU Abu Dhabi
Picking NYUAD was a decision full of unknown, but there was a voice inside my head yearning for adventure, risks, and a different lifestyle.
I love the idea of being in a small college as I can interact with professors easily and build connections in a tight community. A big campus would probably be a little overwhelming for me. In addition, NYUAD has really good resources which I believe further foster my growth and future pursuits.
