Learning Outcomes

Mechanical Engineering Program

Upon graduation, NYU Abu Dhabi Mechanical Engineering students will possess:

  • an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  • an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturing, and sustainability
  • an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  • an ability to communicate effectively
  • an ability to broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  • a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  • a knowledge of contemporary issues
  • an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
  • an ability to apply leadership skills including risk and project management and decision making
  • an ability to apply innovative skills

These student learning outcomes are derived from the Engineering Division's stated educational objectives and pedagogical goals and, also, from the outcomes put forward by ABET, which is recognized internationally as the worldwide leader in assuring quality and stimulating innovation in engineering education through a highly rigorous program evaluation and accreditation process.

The program outcomes are complemented by the intended learning outcomes delineated within each course syllabus, which outline more specifically the knowledge, skill, and aspects of competence that each student is expected to be able to demonstrate at the close of each course.
