Daniel Sierra Gonzalez

Daniel is an engineer-minded scientist, enrolled in the PhD program of Transportation Engineering at New York University, in its Tandon School of Engineering, performing research at NYU Abu Dhabi. His research focuses on the Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram, which seeks to understand the relation between traffic flow and traffic density given specific conditions.
His interest to understand urban behavior kindled since his time in high school, as he would often think how roads should be improved and the impact it would have for travelers. He studied Civil Engineering in Tec de Monterrey, doing an exchange semester in Hamburg University of Technology (Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg) and an internship at Züblin also in Hamburg, being involved with a number of international projects in Northern Europe. Upon graduation, he worked professionally as a Site Engineer for Grupo Garza Ponce in Mexico at Estadio BBVA Bancomer, and later as a Bridge Engineer for International Bridge Technologies (now a part of Systra) in Dubai, where he was involved with a number of transportation projects in the Middle East.
He came back to academia when he decided to resume studies in transportation, being provided a full scholarship by Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, which was funded by the government of Abu Dhabi and had an ongoing collaboration with MIT, and is now part of Khalifa University. Daniel made his master's thesis on the travel behavior of people in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and is now pursuing a PhD in Transportation Engineering at NYU.
