Soft Matter

Soft Matter refers to a class of materials that includes polymers, colloids, liquid crystals, gels, and foams, all of which have the ability to flow and deform under relatively weak forces, and which typically comprise large molecules or assemblies of smaller particles. Our researchers are particularly interested in biological soft materials, and how their fascinating properties arise from the dynamics and spontaneous organization of proteins, nucleic acids, sugars, and lipids.

Principal Investigator: Aleksander Rebane

The Life Molecules and Materials Lab investigates the physical principles that govern how biomolecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids self-organize to perform essential cellular functions. Using advanced biophysical techniques, including single-molecule optical tweezers and high-resolution microscopy, the lab studies protein and RNA folding, biomolecular phase separation, membrane organization, and the spatial regulation of protein synthesis, particularly in neurons. Extending beyond cellular systems, the lab also explores soft matter and interfacial mechanics to develop biomimetic materials, such as super-omniphobic hydrogels for anti-fouling and biointerface applications. Through this interdisciplinary research, the lab seeks to uncover fundamental principles of molecular organization and apply them to the design of innovative functional materials.
