Gennaro (Rino) Esposito studied Chemistry at the University of Naples (Italy) and received the Laurea in Chimica cum laude (MSc in Chemistry with honors) in 1979. From 1980 to 1982, he worked as a secondary school chemistry teacher and research fellow at the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) laboratory of Naples University. In 1982 he joined the NMR research laboratory of Eniricerche (Monterotondo – Rome, Italy) as a researcher. In 1990, he left Eniricerche and moved to the University of Udine, Italy, first as a biophysics permanent researcher and later, from 2000 to 2018, as an associate professor of Applied Physics. At NYUAD, he first spent a sabbatical in 2014 as a visiting professor of Chemistry. In the same position, he then obtained a spring term appointment from 2015 to 2017 and finally a full-time appointment from 2018 to 2021, when he moved to research-only positions first as a senior research scientist and subsequently as a research professor.
Throughout his academic career, Rino Esposito has always worked and is still active in the field of NMR spectroscopy of proteins and biopolymers. In particular, he has been involved in the structural and functional characterization of immunoactive peptides, oligonucleotides, proteins, transcription factors, and amyloidogenic proteins, coupled with NMR methodology research. He authored more than 180 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. While in Udine, he was also responsible for the mass spectrometry laboratory of the MATI Center. Esposito also worked in many international laboratories (Biochemistry Dept., Oxford University, UK; School of Pharmacy, London University, UK; Chemistry Dept. Lausanne University, Switzerland). He was invited as a Visiting Professor at University J. Fourier, Grenoble, France and twice at the Institute for Protein Research, University of Osaka, Japan.
Rino Esposito has served as a member of many advisory boards, editorial boards and committees and has supervised about 30 PhD or degree (MSc, BSc) students and some 20 postdoctoral fellows. He is currently a board member of the PhD School in Molecular Medicine of Udine University, a member of Istituto Nazionale Biostrutture Biosistemi (INBB), and a member of Mohammed bin Rashid Academy of Scientists (MBRAS). He has been an invited speaker at many national and international conferences. In 2013, he received the Italian Magnetic Resonance Gold Medal for his NMR research activity. As a PI, unit-responsible scientist or national coordinator, he received several research grants (National Research Council – 1994, 1996, 1998; University Ministry COFIN/PRIN– 1998, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2013; University Ministry FIRB - 2003, 2007; European Union – 1998, 2006; Health Ministry – 2001, AARE–2018).
