Bringing Innovative Ideas to Life

Mauricio Lamoyi, Class of 2024

My degree at NYUAD was crucial in shaping where I am today. It gave me the academic foundation I needed and helped me develop an international perspective. This has allowed me to adapt to different environments and make the most of opportunities wherever I go. Joining the iGEM team was a defining experience for me. Representing NYUAD in the largest international synthetic biology competition gave me the chance to lead a team and see firsthand how science can address real-world problems. It taught me the importance of combining education, human connections, and entrepreneurship to tackle challenges in a multidisciplinary way.

I’m currently doing a master’s in Human Health Engineering at KU Leuven in Belgium. I chose this path because I wanted to continue my engineering education while embracing a new challenge. Talking to faculty I’d worked with and researching my options helped me decide this was the right fit. I love the constant variety and challenges that come with it. Every day brings something new, whether it’s a class, a topic, or meeting new people. Most importantly, it gives me the chance to work on something I’m passionate about—improving human health through technology.

Major: Bioengineering

In the long term, I want to move into entrepreneurship in biomedical engineering. It’s a field that needs both technical and business support, and I want to help bring innovative ideas to life. Personally, I’d like to give back to others in the way NYUAD helped me start my career.
