NYU Abu Dhabi Opens Its Doors: Showcasing Academic Excellence and Innovation

We welcomed hundreds of visitors to our fourth Open Campus Day on February 15, 2025, where our vibrant campus came alive with demonstrations, exhibitions, and hands-on experiences across research, innovation, and the arts.

Research and Innovation at the Forefront

In our Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB), visitors engaged with ongoing research on stem cell identity, organoid growth, and fruit fly genetics, gaining insights into the fundamental principles of neuroscience. "Genomics is reshaping life sciences, and at CGSB NYUAD, discovery happens at the bench—where cutting-edge research and hands-on experimentation drive breakthroughs in healthcare and beyond," explains Dr. Enas Qudeimat, Head of CGSB Research Administration and Outreach. "Today, we showcased how our research makes a real difference, turning science into tangible healthcare solutions that benefit our community and region."

The Field Robotics Lab saw faculty, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students demonstrate their latest work in autonomous field robotic systems. Visitors interacted with several underwater robotic platforms and off-track, jeep-like vehicles, getting a firsthand look at how technology can address regional and global challenges. "The intersection of AI, Decision Sciences and Robotics at NYUAD is particularly exciting because we're developing provable solutions for real-world challenges," notes Professor Kostas Kyriakopoulos, Lead Researcher in Autonomous Field Robotic Systems.

Arts and Cultural Dialogue

The NYUAD Art Gallery welcomed visitors to Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial, a dynamic exhibition featuring 21 artists, architects, designers, and collectives from across the GCC. Running until April 20, the exhibition captures key moments in the region's cultural scene since 2019.

"In the past decade, we have witnessed a proliferation of arts initiatives across the GCC that have transformed the cultural landscape," says Maya Allison, Executive Director of the NYUAD Art Gallery. "The Gallery has played an ongoing role in highlighting and documenting the region's art history and contemporary developments."

The exhibition, co-curated by Allison and Art Gallery Curator and Research Assistant Professor Duygu Demir, explores compelling themes including societal shifts, ecological challenges, urban development, and heritage.

Scientific Discovery and Environmental Research

Our Interactive Research Exhibition transformed complex scientific concepts into engaging, hands-on experiences. These interactive exhibitions bring ground-breaking research to life, engaging the community in hands-on scientific discovery. From neuroscience and genetics to agriculture and bio-art, the exhibits highlight how small organisms—fruit flies, C. elegans, and red palm weevils—unlock big scientific insights. Visitors also learned how molecular markers improve crop breeding, and how art and science merge to inspire innovation.

Campus Life

Sexton Square pulsed with energy as local artisans displayed their work and performances entertained throughout the day. Our student ambassadors shared their passionate insights about life and research opportunities at NYUAD, giving visitors a genuine glimpse into our university community.
