Gazelien Records: Amplifying Music Technology Talent

Technology is transforming how music is created, experienced, and shared. From immersive audio and digital production to emerging forms of creative expression, the future of music increasingly depends on people who can combine artistic vision with technical expertise.

Preparing students for this evolving landscape requires more than classroom learning alone. Future producers, sound engineers, composers, and music technologists need opportunities to develop their craft in professional environments, collaborate across disciplines, and explore how technology can expand the possibilities of music.

Gazelien Records, led by Associate Professor of Practice of Music Technology Matteo Marciano, is NYU Abu Dhabi's student-led music technology research and production incubator. Operating as both a creative studio and research platform, it provides hands-on experience in music production, recording, sound engineering, mixing, and creative technology.

Gazelien Records was envisioned as a professional incubator where music technologists, producers, engineers, and sound artists can transform their skills into real-world creative practice. We operate with the ambition and standards of a major label, while remaining grounded in education, mentorship, and artistic discovery. It is a space where students learn not only how music is made, but how talent is developed, supported, and connected to the industry.

More than a teaching initiative, Gazelien Records functions as a professional creative laboratory and infrastructure platform. Students work on real productions, collaborate with international partners, and build industry-ready portfolios before they graduate.

By combining education and professional practice, students gain the expertise and industry connections needed to build sustainable careers in music and creative technology. Through professional recording facilities, mentorship, hands-on production, and training in areas such as rights management and industry standards, students develop the technical, creative, and professional skills required to succeed in an evolving global music industry.

Being part of Gazelien Records has been an invaluable experience as I'm keen to pursue a career in the industry. It has equipped me with the skills and practical experience needed to take the next steps in my career. Having the trust and creative freedom to work in a professional high-end studio has been empowering, and it has pushed me to continue refining my craft both as an artist and a sound engineer.

To expand these opportunities, Gazelien Records is developing partnerships with leading music industry organizations, connecting students with global networks, enabling emerging talent to reach international audiences.

This intersection of creativity and innovation was demonstrated through NYU Abu Dhabi's participation in the ASTROBEAT – Music from Space initiative. Working alongside international partners involved in space exploration, Gazelien Records students recorded and produced original compositions that were launched into orbit and streamed aboard the International Space Station through an internal competition.

The winning works, "Little Brooks" by visiting NYU Steinhardt student Summer Reid and "No Gravity" by NYU Abu Dhabi alumna Nadine Kabbani, were selected through a collaboration between NYU Abu Dhabi and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). The project demonstrated how creative practice can help communicate scientific ideas, inspire curiosity, and engage audiences with complex topics in new ways.

The ASTROBEAT – Music from Space collaboration not only highlights the incredible talents of our students but also showcases NYUAD's commitment to promoting art through innovative projects. Seeing our students' compositions being launched into space is a remarkable milestone, and we are excited to contribute to this unique fusion of music and space exploration.

Today, Gazelien Records is helping establish NYU Abu Dhabi as a regional hub for music technology, audio innovation, and creative entrepreneurship. By connecting education, research, and professional practice, it equips students with skills that are increasingly valued across the music, media, entertainment, and technology sectors.

At the same time, the initiative is helping cultivate a new generation of creative talent equipped to contribute to the UAE's growing creative economy, and to shape the future of music and technology around the world.
