NYUAD Assistant Professor of Biology Aashish Jha, and star of Netflix's Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut talks about microbes that live in our gastrointestinal tracts.
There is no doubt that industrialization has disrupted our microbiomes. The loss of many microbes — those that have been residing in our gastrointestinal tracts since the times of our hunting-gathering ancestors, evolving with us as our lifestyles changed — is leading to many chronic diseases. But our appreciation for our microbes is increasing. The bugs that were almost extinct in our gut are coming back. Now, we need to figure out how to harness them to keep us healthy.
Jha’s work spans the microbiome, population genomics, immunology, and evolutionary biology. He combines genomics, statistics, and machine learning to study how population history, genetics, and lifestyle affect the microbiome and its impact on health.
