Yaw Nyarko studies human capital and economic growth, which recently culminated in a pioneering study on the impact of brain drain on Africa's intellectual and economic development. He is one of the founding directors of NYU's Africa House and helped shape the study abroad program in Ghana. He brings his groundbreaking approach to global economics in his NYUAD class, Introduction to Economic Thinking.
Courses Taught
This course introduces students to the theory and practice of international development with a focus on the role of institutions and governance to achieve sustained increase in income and improvement in the standard of living of the population of developing countries, accompanied by structural changes in the economy, such as technological innovation, diversification of production, and improvements in human capital. The course will address the underlying economic theories motivating interventions and also the institutions, tools and processes of international economic development from a practitioner perspective. Particular attention will be paid to the MENA region and fragile and conflict affected states. Invited speakers by senior economists of international institutions such as the World Bank constitute an important component of the course.
Prerequisite for ECON-GH Program: Must be enrolled in the MSc Abu Dhabi Graduate Program as a degree-seeking student.

This course will cover topics on the interface between economics and computer science, with special emphasis on issues of importance to economically developing regions. Students will work in teams to tackle real-world and interdisciplinary problems. Students will address questions of markets and economic development using Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICTD) techniques in the context of development.
