New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Academic Advisor reporting to Associate Director, Academic Resource Center and Academic Advisement. 

Academic Advisors offer and support a wide range of services and programs designed to meet the needs of NYUAD’s globally diverse student body. The Academic Advisor exemplifies NYUAD principles of creating a student-centered atmosphere through the provision of exceptional academic advising for all new and continuing students. Primarily during, but not limited to, the first three (pre major) semesters, advisors serve as a source of information about placement, registration, degree requirements, major selection, and all other academic policies. They will orient new students to the rich ecosystem of mentoring, academic support, and student success initiatives available across the Campus and serve as liaisons between students and faculty mentors. Advisors may meet individually or in groups with students several times each semester to discuss questions related to academic planning and serve as liaisons with other offices providing student support and advising services (University Registrar, Program Heads, Global Education, Student Success and Well-being, Academic Enrichment Program, and the Writing Center), to which they will refer students when appropriate.

Advisors will be expected to work with the Director of Student Advisement to orient faculty pre-major and major mentors, develop and supervise peer tutoring programs, and implement NYU’s new advising and mentoring platform, NYU Connect. Additional responsibilities will include conducting advising workshops and webinars for incoming and current students.

Key Responsibilities: 

Advising and Academic Resource Center Responsibilities

  • Advisors offer a wide range of services and programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body. They serve as a basic source of information about the degree requirements, policies, and procedures of the Campus. Through workshops and individual advising sessions, advisors assist students in planning their academic programs, choosing a major, seeking tutorial assistance, and navigating registration. The advisors serve as liaisons with other offices and can make referrals when appropriate
  • The advisor is the best source for students to visit when they are unsure of where to go for help and will help them define academic goals, including selection of majors; evaluate progress toward goals; understand curricular requirements; navigate course selection; determine whether or not they need assistance with study skills (time management, organizing course information, stress management, etc.); and, when appropriate, find additional institutional and community support services

Administrative Duties

  • Advisors maintain student profiles and records in NYU Connect advising platform; document all pertinent student information; facilitate forms and approvals for grade change requests, overload petitions, curriculum and study abroad equivalencies; track retention, recommend add/drops, conduct degree audits, and maintain advising statistics. They will also assist with the development of new peer advising and tutoring programs, contribute to newsletters/promotional materials, maintain website updates, respond to student questions from website/email alias, and present advising services at orientation events

Additional Duties

Required Education: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling or related academic field

Preferred Education: 

  • Master's Degree

Required Experience: 

  • 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Critical thinking & problem-solving skills, planning & organizing, conflict management, exceptional communication skills, knowledge of project management and business analysis techniques & tools
  • Strong knowledge of data development processes including integration design and data modeling
  • Proven ability to perform data analysis and synthesis
  • Excellent documentation capabilities (effective note taking, detailed requirements documents, articulate process flows, meaningful presentations, etc.)
  • Ability to manage and communicate with, a diverse set of stakeholders in both technical and non-technical environments
  • Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills including tact and diplomacy.
  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow through
  • Effectively multitask, as well as manage, lead, and delegate tasks and authority where needed
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information, materials, and staff/student sensitive data
  • Strong leadership capability, executing as appropriate in the areas of responsibility
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technology solutions in business terms, establish rapport and persuade others
  • Ability to work autonomously with little supervision
  • A demonstrated ability to Influence, provide strategic insight, communicate, lead others
  • Knowledge of a variety of current and emerging technologies related to NYU’s global needs

Preferred Experience: 

  • Knowledge of academic processes and procedures in a university setting
  • Understanding of and ability to implement various academic advising theories and practices
