These 1.5 hour workshops developed by the OIE and Academic Appointments aim to provide guidelines and effective strategies, and to discuss best practices for faculty searches for Search Committee members. Resources are provided for all faculty to review. All first-time members of search committees are required to participate in a workshop at the start of their service.
In Part I, these sessions provided an overview of best practices for designing a recruitment strategy that draws a diverse candidate pool. Participants will receive resources and tools to conduct broad outreach and will learn strategies to mitigate implicit/unconscious bias at each stage of the search process.
In Part II, the sessions focused on providing some of the best practices for executing inclusive recruitment strategies; reviewing some of the tools and resources that could be used to evaluate applicants fairly and explore recruitment metrics and discussed strategies that can be used if a candidate pool is not diverse. Case studies and embedded activities were used to engage participants in reflective practice, peer discussion, situational analysis and action planning.
