Belonging at NYUAD

At NYU Abu Dhabi, belonging is strengthened through everyday interactions that reflect care, curiosity, and respect across cultures. The Office of Global Access and Engagement fosters this environment by promoting intercultural engagement as a core component of community life.

We foster a campus culture that enables people from diverse backgrounds to connect meaningfully, work collaboratively, and contribute fully.

Through a range of frameworks, OGAE fosters a deeper understanding of how identity, experience, and perspective shape interactions in a global university setting. These tools enhance our collective ability to foster relationships founded on trust and mutual respect.

A Personal and Shared Responsibility

We view belonging as both a personal experience and a shared responsibility. Engaging across cultures provides a pathway to creating opportunities to learn from one another, navigate differences thoughtfully, and strengthen the social fabric of our community.

Our approach emphasizes:

  • Recognition of visible and invisible cultural influences
  • Skills that support collaboration across diverse contexts
  • Practices that encourage inclusive dialogue and connection

A strong sense of belonging enhances well-being, learning, innovation, and collaboration. In a community representing diverse/different cultures, languages, and experiences, intercultural engagement is essential not only for navigating differences but also for realizing the full potential of our collective strengths.

This work supports NYU Abu Dhabi’s mission to cultivate a globally engaged campus where everyone can thrive.

How We Foster a Sense of Belonging on Campus

A Community of Belonging

We foster a learning and working environment where all community members feel valued, supported, and able to contribute authentically.

Intercultural Engagement

We encourage intentional interactions that deepen understanding, build trust, and strengthen our diverse global community.

Cultural Intelligence

We provide resources to expand adaptive skills and mindsets required to collaborate effectively across cultures.

Culturally Reflective Practices

We utilize models such as the Intercultural Developmental Inventory (IDI) and Intercultural Conflict Styles (ICS) to explore how values, communication styles, and lived experiences influence our understanding of difference and our relationships with one another.
