The Photonics Research Lab is working to develop novel Photonic/Optoelectronic components for next generation optical and data communication networks. Our interest is to address limitations of communication bandwidth using novel process platforms such as silicon photonics. Recently, much of our lab efforts is focused on designing process technology for low-temperature germanium photodetectors and modulators in CMOS compatible platform.
Our lab is also interested in applications of optical sensors and Opto-MEMS to cybersecurity, health care and environment monitoring. Such sensors provide compact, high-sensitivity and low-cost alternatives. They are robust against electromagnetic interference and can be relatively easy to deploy.
The overall goal of our lab is to explore the following areas:
We have access to a world-class advanced characterization facility essential for fast prototyping and qualifying high-speed photonics/Optolecrronics systems and sub-systems.
