Research Areas: Synthetic and molecular biology; microbial biotechnology

Andrés Felipe Carrillo earned a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Los Andes, Colombia. He completed a Master’s degree in Biotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, and a PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Cantabria, Spain. Following his doctoral training, he held visiting scientist positions at Acies Bio in Slovenia and at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research in Germany, and subsequently completed postdoctoral training in microbiology at University College Cork, Ireland, and in molecular biology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the United States.

Carrillo's research focuses on microbial biotechnology and synthetic biology, with an emphasis on the development of genetic tools for microbial strains. His work centers on the design of novel gene expression systems and plasmids with tunable copy number, enabling precise control of gene expression in microbial hosts. His current research includes the deployment of synthetic biology tools in the gut microbiome, as well as the development of synthetic genetic systems for marine microbial strains.

Carrillo is currently a Research Scientist in the NetBio Group, led by András György, at New York University Abu Dhabi. His key publications include Unlocking the Strength of Inducible Promoters and Plasmid Copy Number Control Represents a Versatile Tool in Synthetic Biology Applications, which have contributed to advancing synthetic biology applications in diverse microbial systems.
