Edward Smith

Postdoctoral Associate Affiliation: NYU Abu Dhabi
Education: BSC, PhD, University of Southampton, UK; MSc, University College London/Imperial

Ed Smith undertook his undergraduate degree in Marine Biology with Oceanography at the University of Southampton, followed by a Master’s in Remote Sensing at University College London/Imperial College. His PhD at the University of Southampton focused on the role of green fluorescent protein (GFP)-like pigments in corals. He joined NYUAD in September 2012 and works as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Marine Biology Laboratory.

At NYUAD, Ed Smith’s research is focused on using corals growing in the extreme conditions of the Arabian/Persian Gulf to improve our understanding of whether/how corals will adapt to future climate change. Key aspects of this research include investigating the population structure and connectivity of corals within and outside of the Gulf, and identifying the molecular mechanisms used by Gulf corals in response to the unique thermal conditions.
