“I saw software engineering as a way to get to where I wanted to be in Berlin,” Maria explains. “I’m really surprised at how much I love my job and how much I love coding.”
Her surprise may have something to do with the fact that her first big role as a software engineer has evolved into a deeply meaningful work experience where coding is only part of her growth. NYU Abu Dhabi prepared her well to succeed in a tight-knit workplace that places a high value on cultural fit.
“The liberal arts classes really strengthened my soft skills and helped me get here,” she says. “The ability to leverage my resources has got me to where I am today.”

To be a good computer scientist, Gutierrez says, you also have to be able to navigate the human side of the profession. Understanding interrelated global problems is critical. Getting to know other people in the field is an absolute must.
At NYUAD she took it upon herself very early on to expand her networks and seek advice from senior classmates in the computer science major. Seeking guidance allowed her to navigate future challenges and gave her the confidence to excel in a male-dominated field.
“The liberal arts classes really strengthened my soft skills and helped me get here. The ability to leverage my resources has got me to where I am today.
These days Gutierrez is excited to continue building her technical skills in the startup environment and growing her local networks. She hopes to connect with other NYUAD students and alumni who pass through Berlin, as she did for Study Away and J-Term.
“There’s a joke that NYUAD people love NYUAD people,” she laughs. “It’s true! I’m always happy to meet alumni. I know they will be someone thirsty for knowledge, passionate about learning. It’s a very special group of people.”
