This session will present a case example of a young boy’s journey in school with the support of his multidisciplinary team comprising of educators, special educators, speech therapists, ABA therapist, and parents. Panelists will share the challenges, the victories, their ever-evolving process, and the lessons learned.

Unified Community Training, Module #1
SO-UAE’s Unified Community Training is designed to sensitize community members towards the challenges and support needs of individuals with IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities). This training includes introspective activities, open discussions about making room for uncomfortable experiences, and evidence-based support strategies that attendees can implement to be of better support. Participants who complete both modules with receive a certificate of attendance.

A Journey of Values: Aligning Choices with What We Value Most
Through guided visualizations, journaling prompts, group discussions, and play-based learning activities, this experiential workshop takes parents through a journey of reflection and introspection, enabling them to visualize what is best for themselves and their children and to reconnect with their values to make informed choices.

Consent and Assent
This session will discuss what assent is, the difference between consent and assent, why it matters, who it applies to, and how to collect it. It will focus on why educators might consider including assent practices in their classrooms, what can be gained from doing so, and discuss anticipated challenges.

Preparing Your Child for Community Activities
The session features a discussion on the benefits of engaging PoDs in recreational activities. Presenters will address common barriers to participation and will provide solutions as well as general guidelines for selecting appropriate activities.

Breaking Down Barriers to Inclusion
This NYUAD Student moderated panel features stories from community members and volunteers about their experiences engaging in inclusive activities alongside people with IDD. This session will be an open discussion where panelists will share their challenges, highlights, lessons learned, and growth journey, in hopes to inspire other community members to take a step towards engaging in similar activities, get educated, and do their part towards a more inclusive society.
