Dhruvi Joshi

I spent the summer working at New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the largest transportation network in North America, serving a population of 15.3 million people. With the transit system so present in the everyday lives of New Yorkers, the impact of different projects is clear and relatable.  

During my time here, I have had the opportunity to support a range of projects such as advancing congestion pricing, rolling out OMNY, the MTA’s contactless fare payment system and building out proposals for MTA’s organizational reform. The focus has been targeted towards stabilizing and modernizing the more than 100-year old subway system. With new leadership guiding each of its agencies, it has been exciting to witness first hand the critical time the MTA is living though. 

As a Civil Engineering student interested in Urban Planning, the MTA has given me an overview of the collaboration required between local governments, the private sector and the public at large to inform city infrastructure projects. Moving into thinking about life after graduation as a rising senior, this exposure has allowed me to evaluate my preferred industry to work in from a more informed standpoint.

Any advice?

As for some advice, I cannot underscore the emphasis on strong clear and concise writing, public speaking and negotiation skills, even for those pursuing STEM-related careers. These skills will help differentiate the you in the workplace.
