Michael Purugganan, Academic Director

Michael Purugganan is the Silver Professor of Biology at New York University NY, and also runs the Date Palm Genome Diversity laboratory at the NYUAD Center for Genomics and Systems Biology. He previously served for seven years as the Dean of Science at NYU (2012-2019) and was a founding director of the NYUAD Center for Genomics and Systems Biology. He also is an affiliate faculty member at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. He has been a Guggenheim and Kavli Fellow, and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2005 and a corresponding member of the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines in 2019. He serves as a Trustee of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and on the international advisory boards of the Philippine Genome Center and the Barcelona Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics. In 2021, he was appointed the first Scientist-in-Residence at the Asian Institute of Management.

  • The Human Resources and Business Operations team at 19 WSN provides support to leadership, faculty, students, and visitors in support of NYU Abu Dhabi's mission.

    The staff at 19 WSN is responsible for all mobility activities and assignment management for NYUAD standing faculty inbound to New York, as well as for New York-based affiliated faculty outbound to Abu Dhabi.

    19 WSN staff makes office space and apartments available to NYUAD professors who travel to New York, whether for a few days, a few weeks, or a few months. Because space is limited, interested faculty should request office space or apartments well in advance.
