Global Asia Initiative

About Us

The NYUAD Global Asia Initiative is an interdisciplinary network of faculty and researchers working on Asia in global, connected frameworks.

What we do

The initiative's mission is to foster connectivity and collaboration among researchers across NYU's global network, in partnership with allied centers at New York University and New York University Shanghai.  The Initiative is a platform for scholars to discuss work in progress, collaborate on curricular development, and host supporting events.

More about the Center

The Global Asia Initiative at NYUAD was first established in Fall 2016.  Since Spring 2018, it been generously supported by extramural funding from the Luce Foundation, in partnership with the New York Center for Global Asia (NYU) and the Center for Global Asia (NYU-Shanghai) for two three-year projects: “Port City Environments in Global Asia" (2018-2021) and "Port City Environments in Global Asia: Research and Pedagogy for Redesigning Studies of Asia" (2021-2024).

Research

The Global Asia Initiative supports research in various formats at different scales, ranging from research and manuscript workshops, webinars and conferences, seed funding for new projects, and long-term sponsorship.  It has a special, but not exclusive, interest in environmental studies.

In partnership with NYUAD eARThumanties, it sponsors Geopolitics and Ecology of Himalayan Water, drawing together faculty from NYU's three portal campus and a network of NYUAD alumni and students, as well as a wide range of experts from the greater Himalayan region.

Beginning in Spring 2023, the Initiative will hold a series of events to workshop commissioned research on the environmental history of Asia, to be published in a two-volume print spin-off from the online Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Asian History
