Making Complex Science Accessible

Renowned Oxford researcher and educator joins NYU Abu Dhabi as visiting professor, eager to inspire students and forge new scientific collaborations in the UAE

John Parrington, a distinguished cell signalling researcher from the UK, has joined NYU Abu Dhabi as a visiting professor, bringing decades of expertise in genetics, immunology, and biophysics to the University’s diverse academic community.

Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, Parrington was the first in his family to attend university. His curiosity about the natural world led him to study natural sciences at the University of Cambridge, followed by a PhD at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and King’s College London.

After his postdoctoral research at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, he established his independent research group at University College London and later moved to the University of Oxford, where he currently serves as Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Joint Head of Research at Worcester College, Oxford.

“My research focuses on how chemical signals regulate cell and bodily functions,” Parrington explains.

I aim to make complex science understandable and exciting, whether through teaching or writing.

He has published over 110 scientific papers, four popular science books, and a textbook, reflecting his dedication to sharing knowledge broadly.

Parrington’s interest in NYU Abu Dhabi was sparked by prior collaborations with talented PhD students from the region. “Visiting Saudi Arabia gave me insight into science and academia in the Arabian Peninsula,” he says. “Working at NYUAD allowed me to join a top US university in a fascinating region, with students and colleagues from all over the world.”

At NYUAD, Parrington will teach genetics, biophysics, diversity, immunology, and a course called The Future of Science.

Although his family couldn’t move with him during his visiting professorship, Parrington sees this as an exciting opportunity for everyone. His wife leads a translational research lab in the UK, his daughter studies veterinary medicine, and his son is pursuing a career in film. “I’m embracing this great opportunity at NYUAD while staying connected to their journeys,” he says.

“I am eager to make friends, meet colleagues, and explore research collaborations both at NYUAD and across the UAE,” he adds. “And personally, I can’t wait to experience the natural landscapes here, which are so different from the UK, and to travel around the region.”

Parrington’s appointment underscores NYUAD’s commitment to academic excellence, interdisciplinary research, and fostering a truly global learning environment where students can be inspired by leaders in science from around the world.
