Congolese intellectual T.K. Biaya was a visiting scholar at NYU from 1996-1997 who prematurely passed away in 2002. His groundbreaking work ranges from urban culture and popular arts to religion, ethnicity, and gender; he is a profound thinker of the relationship between memory and heritage. Biaya’s scholarship is central to the intellectual history of Kinshasa and to conceptualizing the African city as a generative space that is fundamental to understanding global modernity. This session celebrates his work by bringing him back to Washington Square in memoriam.
