In this talk, the speaker will talk about AI could undermine democracy by making it easier to create and spread two types of political misinformation: misleading texts and deepfake videos. Evidence comes from two experiments in the U.S. The first experiment showed that nefarious actors could use large language models to write highly persuasive propaganda with limited effort. The second experiment showed that AI-generated videos in political campaigns would erode faith in elections, yet most voters would not punish politicians for using fake videos to attack their opponents. Thus, despite its promise, AI could pose significant threats to democracy.
