Capturing the Cosmos is catered for advanced photographers to understand what it takes to create breathtaking photos of the Milky Way and the night skies. The workshop will include theoretical tutorials, CASS astronomy seminars, and a practical guide in the Abu Dhabi desert. At the end of the program, participants will understand how to plan trips and shoots successfully, how to capture and compose the images, and how to bring the images to life with special advanced post-processing techniques. 

The two-day workshop will be taught by CASS astronomy seminars, and a practical guide to the Abu Dhabi desert. It will be led by award-winning photographer Samy AlOlabi with lectures by the Center for Astrophysics and Space Science (CASS) research staff. A digital certificate will be provided to all participants who complete the full program.

Workshop Details

  • Dates: January 25, 2pm; January 26, 1pm
  • Capacity: 80 participants
  • Duration: 12-14 hours (Day 1, lecture and desert photoshoot), 4 hours (Day 2, post-production)
  • Age and skill advisory: 18+ with previous photography experience
  • Required supplies: participants may need to provide their own camera (and tripod, if possible)

Day One: In-person training (3 hours) and practical session, trip to the desert (sunset to 11pm)

Day Two: Post-processing session, online (3 hours)

Samy AlOlabi, Astrophotographer

Biography

Driven by his passion for nature and the night skies, award-winning photographer Samy Al Olabi captures the stars from the remote landscapes of Arabia. His stunning panoramas of night skies and deep-sky objects have become iconic, featured as backgrounds on Microsoft and Apple operating systems. Mr. Al Olabi's work has garnered acclaim from prestigious international media, including CNN, BBC, and National Geographic. In 2015, he was honored by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, during the Islamic Art Festival for his exhibition, 'Light & Shades.' A dedicated educator, he has led over 50 lectures and workshops in collaboration with renowned institutions like Nikon School, HIPA, the Union of Arab Photographers, the Emirates Photography Society, Xposure, Manarat Al Saadiyat, and KHDA. This November, he will return to lead the 2024 Capturing the Cosmos Astrophotography Workshop with the Center for Astronomy and Space Science.
