Aysha Hamkari is a Palestinian–Circassian dancer and neuroscience researcher, who is deeply passionate about sharing her culture. Circassians have done a remarkable job of holding onto their culture in diasporas around the world, despite a long and difficult history of cultural erasure and genocide. In this lecture, Hamkari will share information on the Circassian identity and the history of the contemporary Circassian jegu, as well as reflecting on the role of dance and movement today in preserving Circassian culture in diasporas around the world, focusing on Jordan and New Jersey. Hamkari will also share her own experience and relationship with fostering cultural unity and resilience as a way to bring North Caucasians together in Abu Dhabi, her home today.
This event is free and open to the public. No registration required.
This event is part of a series of programs for the exhibition titled Bygones, curated by Anita Shishani and now on view in the NYUAD Project Space.
