A conversation with the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme
This February, it will be the first time that an Arab country will host the world’s most important conference on cities and human settlements. Organized and convened by the United Nations (Human Settlements Programme), the World Urban Forum has become the foremost international gathering for exchanging views and experiences on sustainable urbanization in all its ramifications. The inclusive nature of the Forum, combined with high-level participation, makes it a unique United Nations conference and the premier international gathering on urban issues. The Tenth Session of the World Urban Forum, “Cities of Opportunities: Connecting Culture and Innovation,” will be held in Abu Dhabi on 8th-13th February. For the first time, culture, creativity, and innovation will be at the center of the global conversation about the livability, vitality, and sustainability of cities.
Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, will join us to tell us more about the importance of the forum in this critical age of climate change and global migration and why we should all attend to it, and about her unique experience at the United Nations. Born in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, on August 26, 1961, Ms. Sharif holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Town Planning Studies from the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, UK and a Master of Science in Planning Studies from the Malaysia Science University.
This event is hosted and organized by the Center for Interacting Urban Networks CITIES. CITIES promotes excellence in research that leads to real improvements in terms of economic opportunity and growth, safety and security, health and wellness, and the overall quality and sustainability of everyday life in urban areas. It is fundamental research that can ultimately be translated into pragmatic ideas for increasing the livability of our cities, with a special emphasis in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
