Tarek Al-Ghoussein: Recent Work

Exhibition

WHEN May 24, 2017
WHERE 19 Washington Square North WHO NYU Abu Dhabi Institute Open to the Public

Tarek Al-Ghoussein’s work explores the boundaries between landscape photography, self-portraiture, and performance art. Choosing locations much in the same way a film director does, he moves between abstraction and the specific circumstances found in particular places. Relying on subtle interventions and non-invasive interactions, the images consider various aspects of “identity.” This exhibition features photographs from two of Al-Ghoussein’s current projects.

One documents the vestiges of lives lived in the Al Sawaber, a government housing complex in Kuwait slated for demolition. The vignettes provide intimate views into once private worlds. The portrayals of the interiors and objects tell stories without longing for what once was or lamenting what could have been. The second body of work, Windows on Work, examines the “window” of the buses that transport the labor workers as a place of representation/performance.
