The construction of a road seems to be a fairly straightforward state project that is designed to facilitate economic growth, communication, and travel. However, the construction of the first paved road from Dubai to Ras al Khaimah in the late 1960s was anything but straightforward. Instead, it resulted in a high-stakes behind-the-scenes struggle between Britain, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia for control over the development process in an increasingly vital region.
