This talk is the keynote address for Abstraction Unframed, the fourth conference of the Association for Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World, Turkey and Iran (AMCA), held in collaboration with the Barjeel Art Foundation.
If one takes into consideration the mutakallimūn’s occasionalist denial of nature, then in Islam abstraction applies before the Muslim artist plans an artwork and touches his tools; the primary abstractionists of Islam are the atomistic occasionalists. Islamic art abstracts only secondarily, merely accentuates the primary abstraction advanced and argued by atomistic occasionalism.
