This Workshop studies the Gulf as a crucial missing link in world history. Examining historical connections, comparisons and contrasts between the Gulf, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. The Global Gulf workshop focuses on how this dynamic and diverse region has been or has become cosmopolitan during different historical periods. Rather than studying the Gulf (the Khalij) in isolation, this workshop brings together scholars of the Gulf with scholars of other global seas that have seen intense theoretical attention: the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. The result of this collaboration will be new ways of thinking about the Gulf in the world.
