Architect and urbanist Yasser Elsheshtawy discusses his study on the urban fabric of Abu Dhabi exhibited at 19 Washington Square North (opening on September 21). Elsheshtawy maps the use of public spaces by predominantly South Asian communities in the UAE. His current exhibition highlights Sector 13 in downtown Abu Dhabi. Through motion-capture photography, aerial cameras, and computer mapping technology, Elsheshtawy provides an in-depth depiction of behavior patterns and how they relate to urban design. The exploration shows the resilience of this predominantly Bangladeshi community in circumventing official space narratives and their ability to convene and carve out a unique haven for themselves.
