Petroleomics: Chemistry of the Underworld

In elementary school science class, we learn that matter is composed of solids, liquids and gases. True to form, reservoir crude oils consist of dissolved gases, liquids, and dissolved solids: the asphaltenes. With these fundamentals, petroleum can be approached utilizing the axiom from Nobel Laureate Francis Crick of DNA fame, “to understand function, study structure.” This defines Petroleomics. These scientific methods, coupled with new in-situ measurements of reservoir oils, address many reservoir complexities. Combining new science and new technology leads to an explosion of applications.
