Unpredictable Futures: Islam, Citizenship, and Political Possibility in France

Talk

WHEN November 1, 2015
6:30-8 PM WHERE NYUAD Campus, Conference Center WHO NYU Abu Dhabi Institute Open to the Public

This talk examines how Muslim French – i.e. those committed to practicing Islam as French citizens and practicing citizenship as pious Muslims – navigate through a social and political world in which they are considered, a priori, as not-French because they are Muslim. This impasse, a reality of Muslim French life, is being challenged by a post-immigration generation of Muslim civic activists. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, the talk reflects on new forms of public religiosity, national citizenship, and political possibility.
