What would an ideal society look like? Plato, the most famous, and the most readable, of ancient Greek philosophers, asks himself this question and comes up with two different kinds of answer to it. In his best-known work, the Republic, he sketches an ideal society in which everyone lives the life that is best for them. He also, in other dialogues, tells the story of Atlantis, a story designed to encourage us to reflect on our own societies, but a story which in the end gets out of its author’s control.
