The United Nations has the all-but-impossible task of putting an end to civil conflict and helping deeply wounded societies rebuild themselves. How far should the UN and other international actors impose their own vision and authority on these shattered lands? Is it better to do less, be patient, and help these weak states heal themselves over time? Lakhdar Brahimi, who has sought to nurture development and reconciliation as a senior UN official in Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq and across Africa, will share his knowledge acquired over decades of public service.
